Hartlepool is an ancient port town whose first abbey was destroyed by Vikings in the ninth century.
The 'Hart' component from the town name means 'stag' from Old English, and 'le pool' means 'by the sea'.
There are a number of good museums in Hartlepool including The Heugh Gun Battery Museum, The Hartlepool Maritime Experience (a reconstruction of an eighteenth century port) and the Hartlepool Museum which houses an original lamp from a lighthouse.
