Darlington - located on the River Skerne - is known as the 'Gateway to the Tees Valley' and is famous for its railway history.
In 1825 the first passenger rail journey in the world took place on the Stockton and Darlington railway line. The town became an important centre for the building of locomotves, including Robert Stephenson and Co workshops famous for the 'Rocket', which was the only locomotive to complete the course in the famous Rainhill Trials.
During the Victorian times, Quaker families influenced much of the town's development.
Darlington's St Cuthbert's Church dates back to the twelfth century and is a Grade I listed building.
